KARISSA HYDE

What is your current title for work?

Scott Base Redevelopment Construction Manager at Antarctica New Zealand

How many years have you been in the construction industry:

15

When did you decide working in construction was the thing you wanted to do:

When I was at school I was looking for a career that incorporated my maths skills, interest in how things work and desire to build things that would make a positive difference, so I decided to study civil engineering.

What are you most passionate about?

I am passionate about working on projects that positively contribute to society, be it through facilitating amazing science, protecting special environments, creating new community assets or helping disadvantaged communities.

Why did you join NAWIC?

I am passionate about increasing the number of women in engineering and construction and also selfishly to spend a little more of my day in meetings where I am not the only women in the room.

What would you like to see for the future of women in construction?

I would love to see women making up half of the industry, where we are no longer the minority but just part of the industry like everyone else.

Words of wisdom or tips for women at the start of or considering a career in construction:

Just try it! There are so many roles and opportunities out there, if you find the first job isn’t for you there are so many others to try.

What is your favourite thing to do for fun:

Cooking, sewing and getting out in nature.
