COURTNEY FRANK-SMITH

What is your current title for work?

Senior Architectural Graduate

When did you start in the construction industry:

2012

When did you decide working in construction was the thing you wanted to do:

As long as I can remember. I grew up surrounded by house construction projects and spent my early years creating cardboard masterpieces. At six, I was drawing my dream bedroom in plan view and crafting things out of scrap wood with a kids’ woodworking set. I always knew I’d either be an Architect or an Engineer.

What are you most passionate about?

I’m passionate about designing spaces that are thoughtful and responsive of the people who use them. I love the process of problem-solving through design and seeing ideas come to life in

built form.

Why did you join NAWIC?

To connect with others in the industry, expand my knowledge beyond architecture, and support women in construction. I value the opportunity to learn from different disciplines and contribute to a more inclusive industry.

What would you like to see for the future of women in construction?

More women in trades and leadership roles. I’d love to see construction presented to young girls as a legitimate and exciting career path.

Words of wisdom or tips for women at the start of or considering a career in construction:

It’s okay not to have all the answers at the start. What matters is your willingness to learn and adapt. Surround yourself with people who support your growth.

What is your favourite thing to do for fun:

Gardening. I love getting my hands in the soil and watching things grow—it’s grounding and creative in its own way.
