What is your current title for work?

Kitchen and Spatial Designer

Your current organisation for work:

Creative director – FIXTURE

How many years have you been in the construction industry:

27 years and counting. I’ve been fortunate enough to be trained by some of NZ’s leading designers and to be encouraged in my design career by strong women also working in construction and leading by example.

When did you decide working in construction was the thing you wanted to do:

Its in my DNA... my Dad was a builder so I learnt to draw 3D boxes before I could draw squares! I’ve always loved design and have wanted to be involved in the industry since I was young. Renovations are my favourite space to develop, often working alongside the architect and client to achieve a beautiful outcome.

What are you most passionate about?

Good design should be available to everyone, regardless of budget, so imparting many years of knowledge to help my clients with their decisions is important for a great outcome. In building a good working relationship with my clients ensures the space that I’m designing for them is perfect and unique to their family dynamic, meeting the brief.

Why did you join NAWIC?

Belonging to NAWIC is a great space to learn with like-minded industry colleagues and educate myself further, connecting and networking with other creatives and industry specialists along the way. Joining a supportive group who champion women in the construction industry will help further our industry and allow women to be more inclusive.

What would you like to see for the future of women in construction?

To be able to work within an industry that offers equal opportunities and doesn’t discriminate against gender.

Words of wisdom or tips for women at the start of or considering a career in construction:

Use your voice – speak up...don’t ever let anyone tell you it can’t be done just because you are a woman.

Gender should not matter when it comes to helping others or being part of a team, especially in a fast-paced and stressful environment like construction. Always further your education in the industry – be open to learning new skills and doors will open for you.

What is your favourite thing to do for fun:

I’m either going on walks with the dog (the boss!) or renovating our home. Always up for a challenge or two I’m open to learning to master a new skill in renovation as long as there is good laughter, music and maybe a gin or two!
