Quantity Surveyor

Your current organisation for work?

Naylor Love Construction

How many years have you been in the construction industry?

5.5

When did you decide working in construction was the thing you wanted to do?

My parents own an earthmoving company, so I grew up in the construction industry. From the age of 15 I was helping out on site and driving all sorts of machinery. I never considered a job in construction because I thought it wasn't an industry that women can have a career in.

That was until I started at Naylors and I found out what a QS was. I started as the receptionist at the Naylor Love Auckland branch and after 1.5years I decided that I wanted to be a QS, now 4 years later I have never looked back. I love the environment and being on site and watching it all come together, it really gives you a sense of accomplishment.

What are you most passionate about?

Getting more industry exposure for women and girls. I want to see a very diverse construction industry, to see it split 50/50 with men and women, and I want women to be in the big seats. I want to see them owning companies and being CEO's, being industry leaders.

Why did you join NAWIC?

To get support from fellow women in the construction industry and to provide support for others.

What would you like to see for the future of women in construction?

More women in trades and more strong female leaders in senior roles (CEO's, Upper management, etc). See women getting the same opportunities as their male counter parts.

Words of wisdom or tips for women at the start of or considering a career in construction:

Don't let the fear of judgment hold you back from putting yourself out there.

Don't be intimidated by a room full of men; you belong in this industry and don't let anyone make you feel otherwise.

Reach out to other women in the industry for guidance and support, we are all so open to helping each other.

What is your favourite thing to do for fun?

The Gym! Hiking and Stand up paddle boarding
