STEPHANIE SHARP

ŌTĀKOU / OTAGO SECRETARY

What is your current title for work?

Group HR Advisor at Naylor Love

How many years have you been in the construction industry:

I’m just coming to the end of my first year! Although previously I’ve worked in mining which holds similar principles.

What are you most passionate about?

Personal growth, whether it’s our teams or my own, and supporting people to add as many skills and pearls of wisdom to their kete as they can during their careers to better serve themselves and their peers.

Why did you join NAWIC?

NAWIC offers a unique outlet for women in an industry that is often not designed to suit our needs or style of learning. It’s a great reminder that, while you might not see an awful lot of us on sites or in local offices each day, there are more women taking

part in this industry than you think and, if you seek it, there are plenty of people out there who can support you and relate to your experiences. It’s really inspiring to read some of the stories of women who have come up through the ranks within NZ

recently too!

What would you like to see for the future of women in construction?

Greater support for our wahine in trades who often are expected to overcome additional barriers both physically and mentally to perform the same roles on site as their male counterparts and more targeted leadership training and development for women in technical or support roles looking to progress within the industry.

Words of wisdom or tips for women at the start of or considering a career in construction:

Trust yourself, back yourself and invest yourself 100%. Like any career path, construction will come with it’s unique set of challenges but if you ask the right questions, dig in when it gets tough and seek support when you need it, you will reach your goals (often at a much faster rate of knots than other industries!).

What is your favourite thing to do for fun:

I LOVE baking and experimenting with new recipes…. Although doing the dishes is definitely not my fave pastime!
