SARAH ANDERSON

NAWIC NATIONAL COUNCIL COUNCILLOR

What is your current title for work?

Senior Associate

Your current organisation for work:

Anthony Harper (Lawyers)

How many years have you been in the construction industry:

I'm on the fringe of the industry as a lawyer – but I've worked exclusively in construction law for the last 9 years.

When did you decide working in construction was the thing you wanted to do:

In my first legal job I worked with a lot of clients who were small building companies. I helped with contract changes and disputes over payment – where the impacts of not getting paid can mean no profit for the year. I liked that I was capable of doing something which could make life a whole lot easier for someone with a different skill set, and I've enjoyed being in the industry ever since.

What are you most passionate about?

Helping people who are not in the industry understand their projects and risk allocation. Achieving a fair and balanced contract for both parties and being on call to help with pragmatic solutions as the project progresses.

Why did you join NAWIC?

I was inspired by the existing members and particularly the committee in Auckland and wanted to be part of it.

What would you like to see for the future of women in construction?

That gender becomes a complete non-issue and people feel facilitated and welcome to pursue the construction careers they want to without barriers.

Words of wisdom or tips for women at the start of or considering a career in construction:

As someone who sits adjacent to the industry and gets to work across a lot of different projects, there are so many more women in construction than you realise.

What is your favourite thing to do for fun:

Hike – as a new resident to the city, I'm slowly making my way through the walks around Christchurch.
