NAT POUNIU

NAWIC MANAWATŪ DEPUTY CHAPTER CHAIR

What is your current title for work?

Construction Supervisor

Your current organisation for work:

G.J Gardner Manawatu

How many years have you been in the construction industry:

4 years

When did you decide working in construction was the thing you wanted to do:

I left teaching and wanted to try something new. After a short amount of time in a Construction Administration role, I wanted to take the next step and move into a practical role which would build on the skills and knowledge I had learnt in those few months. I wanted to challenge the status quo and prove that attitude and the ability to learn is what is the backbone in joining the industry.

What are you most passionate about?

Being a part of the community that develops the viewpoint that women belong and can excel in the construction industry.

Why did you join NAWIC?

Manawatu has a lot of women working in the industry, but I really wanted to be a part of bringing them together to create a community with likeminded people that support and celebrate each other.

What would you like to see for the future of women in construction?

Equality. To be seen as a great choice of career from the younger generations and being seen as highly valuable to have in a team.

Words of wisdom or tips for women at the start of or considering a career in construction:

Be bold, take the opportunity to jump in. Always remember your self-worth, you deserve to be where you are and keep your standards high.

What is your favourite thing to do for fun:

I have a 6 year old son and I love going on road trips and exploring new towns, bushwalks, and coastal places with him. Recently I’ve started cycling and my goal is to do ½ the Lake Taupo ride.
