What is your current title for work?

Sustainability Lead

Your current organisation for work:

Foster Construction Group

How many years have you been in the construction industry:

1.5 years

When did you decide working in construction was the thing you wanted to do:

I always wanted to, but I wasn’t sure how my strengths would come in handy. When the opportunity to have a career change came about, I joined Fosters as a Project Administrator which requires you to be organised, proactive, efficient, and reliable. It was a good realization that your core skills can help you bring value to every industry and team.

What are you most passionate about?

Relationship building – I really enjoy getting to know people beyond the surface level and finding out what motivates them and brings them joy. You often work in very high-pressure situations for extended periods of time with your project team in construction – its good to take the time to get to know the people around you and look out for each other.

Why did you join NAWIC?

I knew I had a lot to learn and wanted to be a part of a community that so many women before us have built. I think NAWIC is a great place to network, meet others with similar passions and be a part of some amazing experiences.

What would you like to see for the future of women in construction?

More acceptance, and stronger strides to make it a welcoming experience – for some, it can be very intimidating and overwhelming when you first join. I am a firm believer that for people to succeed, we need to create an environment that helps them succeed. Hopefully, we can work towards making a career in construction a more welcoming option.

Words of wisdom or tips for women at the start of or considering a career in construction:

Stay humble, be open to learning and believe in your strengths! There’s so many people around us that have been in the trades for years and have an abundance of knowledge. The people around me have always been open to teaching, but there’s certain things I bring to the table and I do the due diligence to ensure that people can rely on me to give those things my best. It is hard work but I have loved every minute of it.

What is your favourite thing to do for fun:

Being out in nature – walks/hikes/ runs/ swims – some fresh air always puts things into perspective and helps me get back into a better mindset.
