MELANIE REID

NAWIC WAIKATO CHAPTER CHAIR

What is your current title for work?

Chief Operating Officer at Soudal

How many years have you been in the construction industry:

I grew up with a Dad who was an electrician so I feel like I’ve been around the industry for a long time, however my direct involvement has been for the past 7 years.

When did you decide working in construction was the thing you wanted to do:

I joined as a business manager, having spent time in other industries, but hoping that the people that worked in Construction were similar to what I’d experienced through my Dad, and I was right!

What are you most passionate about?

The people – people from all walks of life, all backgrounds and all ages. They are hard working, creative and passionate. You can join this from any background and make a go of it in Construction – there is a job for everyone and you can learn skills on the job.

Why did you join NAWIC?

I want to help women join and progress into roles at all levels within construction through exposure, encouragement and providing mentoring and opportunities via the NAWIC network. It doesn’t matter where you start, or what your background or skills are – there is a role for everyone.

What would you like to see for the future of women in construction?

We are an untapped resource of talent, creative thinking and hard workers. An organisation like NAWIC can provide mentors for the next generation to support and guide women through the opportunties.

Words of wisdom or tips for women at the start of or considering a career in construction:

Find someone to support you and give it a go. Work really hard, build your skills and credibility and you may be surprised where that takes you.

What is your favourite thing to do for fun:

Spending time at the beach with our family and new grand daughter and getting out on the boat fishing.
