What is your current title for work?
Environmental Consultant
When did you start in the construction industry:
2022
When did you decide working in construction was the thing you wanted to do:
I was sort of thrown into the site investigation work following the August 2022 storm event that hit the Top of the South. As I developed my professional career, I started to become more involved with the recovery side of natural disaster events and working with contractors and construction companies to return a place back to what it was before disaster hit.
I’ve really enjoyed the construction process when it comes to recovery works and have continued to be involved with this over the last few years.
What are you most passionate about?
Given my work involves being outside frequently, I’d have to say I’m passionate about the outdoors. Whether tramping, biking, skiing or swimming – I like to be out in nature.
Aside from that, I do have some grandma hobbies including knitting/ crocheting and spending time in the kitchen baking or cooking up a big feed.
Why did you join NAWIC?
I wanted to become involved within the community and encourage other women within the industry to join. I’ve had a few great role models who have broken ground for me to work through, and I’d like to continue to be a part of an organising that allows more women to grow.
What would you like to see for the future of women in construction?
I want the stigma of “being a woman in the industry” to dissolve. I think the support women offer each other as well as the support women can offer “men” in the industry is incredibly valuable.
I’d like for the construction industry to celebrate successes as a single unit instead of a male or female specific win.
Words of wisdom or tips for women at the start of or considering a career in construction:
It’s ok to have to take a minute to gather yourself. Showing emotion or having tears means that you care! Sometimes, this field can be intimidating, and I would encourage anyone who is looking to become involved to have ways of debriefing from a stressful day.
What is your favourite thing to do for fun:
My partner and I have an end-of-week tradition where we will go for a big bike-ride in the hills behind Nelson and end at the pub with a beer and a burger. It’s the perfect way to end a work week!
