MEGAN PETERKEN

NAWIC WAIKATO COMMITTEE

What is your current title for work?

National Partnership Manager - ATT

How many years have you been in the construction industry:

11 years

When did you decide working in construction was the thing you wanted to do:

Prior to working in trades I was in the Aviation Sector so it was quite a leap. 11 years later I’m still here and loving it. Being apart of the Apprenticeship journey was definitely part of what attracted me to this industry. Helping the next generation of tradesman and women is huge for me.

What are you most passionate about?

Career’s!! Rather than a job – why not a career!

What would you like to see for the future of women in construction?

More education and assistance for employers seeking to navigate some of the unknowns of employing women in trades. If you want to get political then maybe something also needs to happen with KiwiSaver supporting women who step away to have children. KiwiSaver stops here. A continuation of contributions for up to a year by government in this space. Seeing young women in schools given more of a platform into this sector. I could also say seeing more women supported in their trades endeavors but honestly I am seeing this in business already. If you had asked me 5 – 8 years ago I think I would have struggled to find much in this space.

In 2021 it is our new normal which I really love. Covid changed the landscape everywhere and post NZ lockdowns women were overly represented in the unemployment stats. They now form part of the fastest growing statistic for trades and construction uptake.

Words of wisdom or tips for women at the start of or considering a career in construction:

Having a good support network around you when entering a new career space is key. Having people around you who are there to help and cheer you on is important. Get real about what this is going to look like! Long hours, bad weather, low wages and book work are all par for the course in an apprenticeship. This is the reality of a 3.5 year or 5 year apprenticeship. You may be the only women on site at times or in some cases – ever.. Be your best self and be proud that you have taken your future in hand. Becoming a qualified trades person will not only future proof your life but will set you up as the captain of your own ship. The possibilities are endless once you qualify.

What is your favourite thing to do for fun:

I love the ocean and water in general. Ironically living in Hamilton - no ocean but there is the Waikato River. Paddle Boarding is definitely something I love to do. Skiing is another passion of mine. In another life I was a ski instructor living in France so travel is always right up there. Interior Design is also a real passion. Spending time with family and our very cool dog. Maximum life happiness is the goal.
