What is your current title for work?

Business Development Advisor at BCITO

How many years have you been in the construction industry:

19

When did you decide working in construction was the thing you wanted to do:

I started working in the construction industry when I was 18 and worked in the Export Department for Fletcher Duroid Ltd, a small Fletcher Challenge company. It was a fascinating and exciting industry to be in and after over 4 years exporting I then moved into a NZ sales role selling building paper and aluminium foil for the same company. 13 years later I finished up with Fletcher Challenge and focused on bringing up my boys while working part time in the Engineering industry along with running my own retail business. Fast forward many years and I found myself back in the construction industry in sales, selling aluminium joinery and then moving to my current role at BCITO promoting apprenticeships in the trades.

What are you most passionate about?

Making a positive difference in people's lives by introducing them to a career path in the trades.

Why did you join NAWIC?

Because I am passionate about supporting women in the construction industry. It gives me great pleasure when I sign up a female apprentice and watch them succeed in the industry. NAWIC is a great avenue to promote the importance of including and respecting women in the construction industry and is also a fabulous outlet to inspire other women to pursue a career path in this sector. NAWIC also encourages the men who support women in this field and allows them to see the benefits women bring to the construction industry.

What would you like to see for the future of women in construction?

I would like to see more Employers open to employing women and create an environment where they have a fair chance of success along with an equal pay rate to men.

Words of wisdom or tips for women at the start of or considering a career in construction:

Have the self belief that you can do it. Don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. There is much joy and empowerment in learning new things.

What is your favourite thing to do for fun:

I love anything to do with the water and currently pursuing a life-long ambition to learn to surf.
