KYLIE MACHIN

ŌTĀKOU / OTAGO COMMITTEE

What is your current title for work?

Project Manager

Your current organisation for work:

The Building Intelligence Group

How many years have you been in the construction industry:

Coming up 15 years..!

When did you decide working in construction was the thing you wanted to do:

I really just fell into it. Applied for a job for Project Officer at what was then the Otago District Health Board and realised how interesting and rewarding construction and project work really was.

Why did you join NAWIC?

To grow my network of women in my industry. The events NAWIC put on are always interesting and informative and give us all an opportunity to do things that we would never have the opportunity to do (driving a digger, going back stage at the Regent, etc.). When the opportunity to join the committee came up, I had to jump in and join the fun with setting up such activities!

What would you like to see for the future of women in construction?

That it becomes more of a popular choice - whether in engineering, trades or project management. Schools need to make the range of options in our industry known to the women of the future. Diversity fuels success and when there is a good mix of men and women on a team, the likelihood of success increases.

Words of wisdom or tips for women at the start of or considering a career in construction:

Do it! We need more women in this industry - there would be fewer delays that's for sure! No two days are the same and you are not tied to a desk all day. While it is hard, it is also very rewarding with lots of opportunities to end up where you want to be.
