KIRSTY HOPEWELL

WAITAHA / CANTERBURY CHAPTER CHAIR

What is your current title for work?

Senior Quantity Surveyor

Your current organisation for work:

Naylor Love

How many years have you been in the construction industry:

Since 2004 – 18+ years

When did you decide working in construction was the thing you wanted to do:

When I left school, I didn’t know what I wanted to do. I joined a local groundworks company as an Accounts Assistant and realised I wanted to become a Quantity Surveyor. My enthusiasm for the building industry stemmed from my QS studies, and I went on to develop a love for building and architecture.

What are you most passionate about?

One of my favorite aspects of the construction industry is meeting people of all ages and backgrounds.

This creates an amazing working environment that harnesses different talent pools. Being able to bring these people together for the common goal of creating a new space/building is extremely rewarding, and I enjoy being able to contribute to this.

Why did you join NAWIC?

At work, I have frequently been the only female in a room full of men, and I found myself in need of the support of other women. I joined NAWIC in 2015 and attended a few enjoyable events. This year I took the next step and joined the committee to assist with event planning and promotion. I want to be able to contribute to the continued existence of this platform so that we can continue to grow and inspire women in the industry.

What would you like to see for the future of women in construction?

More women in construction would be fantastic; on the tools, making big decisions, and leading teams. I'd like to see more talented and ambitious women enter the construction industry and serve as role models for others to look up to and support one another.

Words of wisdom or tips for women at the start of or considering a career in construction:

Don’t compare yourself to others, just be yourself.

What is your favourite thing to do for fun:

Most weekends in the summer, I’m usually at car shows in my Karmann Ghia or at vintage markets searching for a bargain. I love anything 50’s, especially the cars and the clothing!
