What is your current title for work?

National Pre-Construction Manager, Summerset

How many years have you been in the construction industry?

10 years

When did you decide working in construction was the thing you wanted to do?

Whilst on my OE in London, I ended up by chance working for a large global construction company. I loved being on site and had great colleagues who mentored me, eventually working my way up through assistant site manager roles to project manager. I completed my Masters in Construction Management over there whilst working on site which was such a cool way to extend my knowledge and put theory into practice.

What are you most passionate about?

I love working as a team, striving towards a goal and putting forward a quality product. There’s something unique about being able to see what you build and the positive impact it has on future residents / occupants. And I’m passionate about sharing knowledge and ensuring people entering the industry have opportunity and mentorship

Why did you join NAWIC?

My friend Gaz convinced me! We’ve both had great mentors in the industry and benefited from their experience and guidance. Through Gaz I met Stacey Mendonca, a founding member of NAWIC NZ, and seeing the many hours she puts in to make our industry better and develop more opportunities for other women, made me want to do my part.

What would you like to see for the future of women in construction?

I’d love to get to a place where it’s not a big deal that you’re a woman in construction – that it’s just seen as normal. Also, for construction to be a career pathway that girls in schools are actively thinking about heading towards. I’m definitely keen to see more flexibility in enabling women to work and raise families. So much respect for Fletchers and Naylors parental leave policies that have developed in the last year!

Words of wisdom or tips for women at the start of or considering a career in construction:

There are huge opportunities in construction. Try to learn from as many people as you can across a variety of roles. Commit to upskilling yourself and being proactive – a good attitude counts for a lot.

What is your favourite thing to do for fun?

Hockey, running, tramping, travelling and being at the beach
