TE WHANGANUI-A-TARA / WELLINGTON CHAPTER CHAIR

What is your current title for work?

Carpentry Apprentice and Business Owner

Your current organisation for work:

J.Grae Building Limited, Wellington, Tradie Lady and BR Flooring.

How many years have you been in the construction industry:

Seven

When did you decide working in construction was the thing you wanted to do:

After renovating my own home in 2019. There was so much that I could 'almost' do myself but didn't have the experience to follow through on. By the end of 2023 I will be finishing my fourth renovation and I've completed 90% of the carpentry myself.

What are you most passionate about?

Service and giving back to my communities.

I've been incredibly lucky in my life and career and I hope to offer opportunities to others.

Why did you join NAWIC?

I was invited to join by someone I have a lot of respect for. When I looked into NAWIC, the events and networking opportunities were really appealing.

What would you like to see for the future of women in construction?

Equal pay and far more of us in industry leadership positions.

Words of wisdom or tips for women at the start of or considering a career in construction:

Join NAWIC, access the networks, talk to everyone you can and learn from other people's experiences.

What is your favourite thing to do for fun:

Learning new skills. I love the difficulty and discomfort that comes with being on the edge of your knowledge and experience.

I'm currently learning Japanese and starting out in mountain biking.
