JULIE-ANN ROSS

ŌTĀKOU / OTAGO COMMITTEE

What is your current title for work?

Architectural Designer / Company Director

Your current organisation for work:

design arc Limited

How many years have you been in the construction industry:

28 years

When did you decide working in construction was the thing you wanted to do:

I knew from a young age that I wanted to be involved in the architectural industry, there was never anything else. My high school art teacher introduced me to a few local architects & I was hooked.

What are you most passionate about?

I love the challenge of residential renovations, as there are so many set parameters to contend with. The new additions or alterations need to be an integral part of the site. This does not necessarily mean the new areas are reproductions of the existing structure, however, they need to reflect the history of the site and sit comfortably balanced with the existing spaces.

Why did you join NAWIC?

The architectural industry has been very male dominated during my career, and I am comfortable in that environment however I wanted to get out of my comfort zone and meet women in the broader construction industry and support them where I can.

What would you like to see for the future of women in construction?

That our skills are valued and that we are an integral part of the construction team. Basically, that it’s not unusual & simply normal to have women on your project, whether they are a plumber, electrician, surveyor or some other specialist.

Words of wisdom or tips for women at the start of or considering a career in construction:

Find people within the industry to talk to, mentors can give great advice and will link you to valuable networks. Gain as much broad experience as you can at the start, so you can see where you fit best, it maybe not where you first thought.

What is your favourite thing to do for fun:

When I have time, I love experimenting with creative media, currently that is miniature architectural modelling & wheel thrown pottery.
