JUDITH BILLINGTON

NAWIC NATIONAL SECRETARY, AWARDS MANAGER

What is your current title for work?

Freelance contractor to NAWIC

How many years have you been in the construction industry:

39+ years

When did you decide working in construction was the thing you wanted to do:

I was interested in interior design at school, studied NZCD (Arch) as it was called at the time. However a role came up as a structural drafter so switched to NZCE (civil) - the rest is history as my career followed various opportunities in the construction industry.

What are you most passionate about?

I love anything construction, and in hindsight either civil engineering or urban architecture would have been a good calling. Guilty secret? Bridges!

Why did you join NAWIC?

To meet with other women working in construction, and to stay close to the industry

What would you like to see for the future of women in construction?

The male champions of women to have a louder voice - we don't have to do it by ourselves and there are strong advocates to help.

Words of wisdom or tips for women at the start of or considering a career in construction:

My tagline "because I can" is nothing revolutionary but I hope all women considering a future in construction act on it. There are many others leaving the ladder down for them.

What is your favourite thing to do for fun:

Something spontaneous - travel and outdoor adventures, recently taken up golf when time allows. You'll also find me in my new happy place - taming my garden!
