JOSE DAVID

TARANAKI TREASURER

What is your current title for work?

Training Advisor for Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation (BCITO)

When did you start in the construction industry:

At 16, I left school early. My dad dragged me into his plastering van and took me to work with him—I didn't even know what plastering was at the time.

When did you decide working in construction was the thing you wanted to do:

I worked with my dad for about ten years before taking time to focus on family. After my marriage ended, I found myself in my 30s, uncertain about my next step. I pursued a Bachelor of Education and a Postgraduate Diploma in Arts but later realised teaching wasn’t the right path for me.

To make ends meet, I did plastering jobs for friends, and despite the years away, I still felt comfortable in that space. When I came across a job opening at BCITO, I was surprised that my experience in both education and plastering could come together. Now, nearly nine years later, I’m still here, loving what I do.

What are you most passionate about?

I'm passionate about supporting young women who feel out of place in traditional roles, as well as mothers looking to enter or return to the workforce. I want to show them that learning a trade is an achievable path and that, with the right support, the trades can offer a great fit for females.

Why did you join NAWIC?

I was invited to join this fantastic organisation that connects and supports women in the industry. It’s an incredible platform that empowers and uplifts women.

What would you like to see for the future of women in construction?

More women joining construction and stepping into leadership roles will help break stereotypes and shift outdated views of women in the industry, driving real change.

Words of wisdom or tips for women at the start of or considering a career in construction:

Go for it! If men are doing it, it must be easy!

What is your favourite thing to do for fun:

I'm hooked on the internet—it puts everything at my fingertips. Right now, I'm deep into home renovations, so I’ve been watching a lot of interior design and garden inspiration. My favourite thing is spending time with my family, and recently, I’ve discovered the peace and reflection of silent retreats.
