HELEN RUSSELL

NAWIC NATIONAL COUNCIL COUNCILLOR

What is your current title for work?

Construction Manager, Brian Perry Civil

How many years have you been in the construction industry:

12 + Years

When did you decide working in construction was the thing you wanted to do:

I don't remember making a conscious decision that I wanted to work in construction.

All I knew is that I didn't want a typical office job; I prefer working outside, I enjoyed salving problems and mathematics and sciences were my strong subjects at school.

School and family pushed me towards university, but I needed to choose a subject. A friend of a friend worked for a major contractor and pointed me in the direction of an ICE scholarship, which I was successful in applying for. I landed on studying Civil and Structural Engineering at Newcastle University.

Thanks to the scholarship I was partnered with a contractor, BAM Nuttall,  and from my first summer placement I knew this industry was where I belonged. I loved being on site, the variety of work, the challenges, the people and the travel opportunities.

What are you most passionate about?

Building successful projects and, especially, successful project teams.

Moving on the the next job knowing that I've left a positive legacy for the Client, users and for all those people who worked on it.

Why did you join NAWIC?

As a way to connect, after often being the only woman in an engineering role on site. To share my experiences and learn from others.

Why did you want to get involved in the national council?

I believe I can add value to NAWIC and back to the wider Fletcher group by being part of the National Council. I have seen visible steps forward for women in construction during my six years in New Zealand and the opportunity to help drive further change would be an honor.

What would you like to see for the future of women in construction?

I want women to know that they can belong in a career in construction. A huge variety of rewarding roles are available out there

Words of wisdom or tips for women at the start of or considering a career in construction:

You belong, your view is valid and you will be heard.

Respect others and yourself. Don't try and be someone or something else just to fit in, embrace your difference.

Allow people to help you and be proactive in helping those following you.

It's not easy! If it was, everyone would be doing it.

What is your favourite thing to do for fun:

Hiking, adventures with my dog, triathlons.
