What is your current title for work?

Senior Project Manager, The Building Intelligence Group

How many years have you been in the construction industry:

Nearly a decade and counting

When did you decide working in construction was the thing you wanted to do:

I have always been interested in architecture and design and have been drawn into the industry through different materials and experiences of different spaces. I later became interested in construction and planning to find ways to create interesting spaces.

What are you most passionate about?

Creative problem solving and wild card ideas to complex problems, I enjoy testing solutions to ensure it is the right choice for the project or client. I focus on always learning from the person next to you and seeing others grow and develop as they overcome challenges on projects.

This is a visual industry and I enjoy quick diagrams to communicate an idea or process, even if this means drawing on a table or window in the absence of a whiteboard.

Why did you join NAWIC?

Originally it was to have the opportunity to see other projects during construction and to see buildings at times and ways than can been seen as a member of the public. I have stayed a member after meeting the wide variety of people who are involved in the industry and NAWIC.

What would you like to see for the future of women in construction?

A continuing growing and developing industry that is flexible and adaptable to change, from sustainability, workplace acceptance and diversity across the industry.

Words of wisdom or tips for women at the start of or considering a career in construction:

Nāu te rourou, nāku te rourou, ka ora ai te iwi.

(With your basket and my basket we will sustain everyone).

Collaboration is always a good thing and people will always bring something useful and unexpected to solve a problem and overcome a challenge. Finding a way to communicate in a variety of ways helps everyone work together toward the same end goal to see success together.

What is your favourite thing to do for fun:

I am always looking for the next thing to learn, from a new recipe, to making lampshades, te reo Māori, to blacksmithing knives.
