What is your current title for work?

Project Manager, Aoraki Construction

How many years have you been in the construction industry?

15 years

When did you decide working in construction was the thing you wanted to do?

Whilst in my 3rd year studying Architecture at Victoria University, I picked up a summer job working on a construction site for Fletcher Construction. From then on I worked a few hours a week on site until the end of my studies – I loved being part of the site team and knew that this was where I belonged.

What are you most passionate about?

I enjoy problem-solving, especially when it comes to tackling the many unique challenges that come with working on a construction site in today’s environment. I am passionate about working as a team - learning from the skills and experiences of others.

Why did you join NAWIC?

As a student, I was lucky enough to be taken under the wing of Stacey Mendonca, a founding member of NAWIC NZ. She encouraged me to join NAWIC as a way of connecting with other women in construction, and learn about the many different ways women are achieving great things across the industry.

What would you like to see for the future of women in construction?

Greater shifts in the construction culture to allow more flexibility, support and development amongst women throughout all stages of their careers. Continued recognition and celebration of women working in the industry, particularly site-based / tradespeople.

Words of wisdom or tips for women at the start of or considering a career in construction:

Dive right in, you’ll never look back! Speak to, and learn from, the many different people working in the huge range of roles across the industry, and find out what gives you the greatest satisfaction. There is something for everyone!

What is your favourite thing to do for fun?

I take every opportunity I can to unwind and spend time with my husband, our 2 young kids and our dog!
