What is your current title for work?

Business Systems Support Specialist

Your current organisation for work:

McConnell Dowell Constructors Ltd

How many years have you been in the construction industry:

10 Years

When did you decide working in construction was the thing you wanted to do:

I originally started in construction as a Document Controller because I wanted to contribute to the rebuild of Christchurch after the earthquakes. I wanted to feel like I was making a difference in my hometown and to be part of a legacy project that enabled communities to become connected (by fixing horizontal assets, services, roads, and bridges) again!

What are you most passionate about?

I am very passionate about getting things right the first time, sharing knowledge and supporting women in the construction and engineering industry.

Why did you join NAWIC?

I wanted to connect with likeminded women, be a part of the creation and facilitation of events and to push myself out of my comfort zone!

What would you like to see for the future of women in construction?

A safe and healthy work environment with a great work-life balance where there is equity, a focus on respect and opportunities for all, and where differences are celebrated and supported! It would be fantastic for construction to be taught at school where girls and women are encouraged to take up a trade or work in the industry.

Words of wisdom or tips for women at the start of or considering a career in construction:

Stay curious and keep learning, one day you will look back and realise how far you have come! Your career is about the journey, not the destination!

What is your favourite thing to do for fun:

In the summer months, Speedway (volunteering, crewing, and watching Sprint Cars) takes up most of my husband and my weekends, along with finding new walking tracks and spending time with family and friends. In winter, we love to ski, ice skate, watch crime documentaries and discover new restaurants in Christchurch!
