ASHLEIGH MOANA-HOWARD

TREASURER

What is your current title for work?

Construction Lawyer

When did you start in the construction industry:

My journey started in 2016 in Melbourne, working in construction law. Since being based out in South Auckland, I have become increasingly immersed in the construction scene here. It is hard not to, with all the development happening around me!

When did you decide working in construction was the thing you wanted to do:

I realised construction was the space I wanted to work in after seeing just how often things go wrong. It is an industry that is messy, high-stakes, and high pressure.

I enjoy being the person who helps make sense of it all, and finds practical ways to fix things for my clients, and move forward.

What are you most passionate about?

I care about fairness, especially in industries like construction that have traditionally lacked diversity. For me, social justice is not just a buzzword, it is something I actively pursue through my legal work. I use the law to back my clients, push for accountability, and help shift the industry in the right direction.

Why did you join NAWIC?

After years of seeing how uneven the playing field can be, I could not sit on the sidelines. NAWIC felt like the natural next step, a way to be part of the dialogue, connect with others who get it, and make sure the industry reflects the diversity of the communities it is building for.

What would you like to see for the future of women in construction?

I would love to see a future where women are not only present, but thriving in every part of the construction industry, from the boardroom to the building site. Progress in this space for me looks like creating environments where people feel seen, heard, and empowered.

Words of wisdom or tips for women at the start of or considering a career in construction:

Have a good attitude. Put your hand up for opportunities, even if they are outside your comfort zone. Stay curious, be open to feedback, and ask questions!

And remember: if you are the smartest person in the room, it is time to find a new room.

What is your favourite thing to do for fun:

When I’m not working, I’m usually off discovering new corners of Aotearoa or planning my next escape. I thrive on fresh air, open roads, and the kind of quiet you only find in nature.
