ANNA WILSON

NAWIC MANAWATŪ CHAPTER CHAIR

What is your current title for work?

Director

Your current organisation for work:

eHaus Manawatu

How many years have you been in the construction industry:

Since 2015

When did you decide working in construction was the thing you wanted to do:

Growing up, I was unaware that this career option was available, and am thrilled that this is changing with the increasing education and support for attracting women into trades. I stumbled into this industry by accident and have chosen to upskill and build a career in construction.

What are you most passionate about?

The inclusion of women in all levels and roles in the construction industry is an area I am highly motivated to make a positive impact on during my career.

The construction industry is well known for being male dominated which is now being challenged as there is a growing understanding that females are willing and able to not only participate but excel in this industry as much as their male-counterparts.

As women, we know that achieving gender balance in any industry brings a multitude of benefits.

Why did you join NAWIC?

I aim to actively participate in NAWIC to strengthen the collective voices of women and the entire industry within our Manawatu region.

What would you like to see for the future of women in construction?

Workplaces where physical and mental health, safety, and wellbeing for all people, inclusive of women, are standard practice, from construction sites through to offices. From there we can strive to achieve environments where everyone can thrive.

Words of wisdom or tips for women at the start of or considering a career in construction:

There are huge opportunities in construction and the career options are vast from trades such as carpentry, plumbing and painting to architecture and engineering to project management and quantity surveying. Do you research and match your skills to a career path. Alternatively, jump in and figure it out along the way – where you start does not have to determine where you end up.

What is your favourite thing to do for fun:

Wining and dining at a quirky bistro with a bunch of good friends – live bands are a bonus.

Otherwise, you’ll find me curled up at home with a good book.
