ABBY LEY

WAITAHA / CANTERBURY SECRETARY

What is your current title for work?

Client liaison

Your current organisation for work:

Bird Built

How many years have you been in the construction industry:

7

When did you decide working in construction was the thing you wanted to do:

Since I was a kid I’ve always loved building and creating things. I used to create massive lego cities and fortresses and would make things in the garage with dad’s off cuts. When my partner went out on his own building, I jumped at the chance to get fully involved.

What are you most passionate about?

My kids! I love seeing them try new experiences and getting out there.

Why did you join NAWIC?

To meet other local women in the industry

What would you like to see for the future of women in construction?

I want to see more qualified women builders running jobs on site and women taking on leadership roles

Words of wisdom or tips for women at the start of or considering a career in construction:

You are more capable than you think. Just get started and get stuck in, never stand still on a site doing nothing, if in doubt of what to do just start picking up rubbish or sweeping. AND if your first on site with the radio on don’t let anyone change the station - stand your ground! 99% of people in construction are lovely and will go out of their way to help you – they were all new at some stage.

What is your favourite thing to do for fun:

Boating and beaches with the kids.
